Beginning a GLP-1 or GIP medication can bring up much more than a medical decision. For many people, it brings up hope, fear, grief, skepticism, and anxiety all at once.
You may wonder if it will work for you. You may worry that it will not. You may feel afraid to hope too much because you have tried so many things before. You may feel anxious about side effects, changes in appetite, changes in your body, or what it might mean if the medication actually helps.
Sometimes the question is not only, “Will this work?” but also, “Who will I become if my body changes?”
That question can feel tender.
For people who have carried excess weight, struggled with body image, experienced medical judgment, or lived through years of dieting, starting a new treatment can activate old wounds. You may feel excitement and shame at the same time. You may feel relief and fear. You may feel hopeful one moment and guarded the next.
This is not unusual. The body holds history.
Somatic Experiencing, or SE, can be a helpful support during this process because it works directly with the nervous system. Rather than treating anxiety as something you should simply push through, SE helps you slow down and notice what is happening in your body as you move through change.
For example, when you think about starting medication, your body may tighten. Your stomach may drop. Your breath may become shallow. You may feel restless, numb, emotional, or overwhelmed. These responses may be connected to past disappointment, fear of being judged, medical trauma, or the vulnerability of wanting something to finally help.
Somatic Experiencing can help you stay connected to yourself in the midst of these feelings. It can help you notice fear without being overtaken by it. It can help you identify what your nervous system needs in order to feel steadier. It can also help you build capacity for hope.
Hope can be surprisingly activating when someone has been disappointed many times. A part of you may want to believe change is possible, while another part may be trying to protect you from being hurt again. SE can help make room for both parts without forcing you to choose one over the other.
At New Perceptions Counseling, we understand that weight, medication, body image, and anxiety are not simple topics. They are often layered with personal history, family messages, cultural pressure, health concerns, shame, and longing.
Somatic Experiencing does not replace medical care, and it does not tell you whether a medication is right for you. That conversation belongs with your medical provider. What SE can do is support the emotional and nervous system experience of making changes in your body and your life.
Whether you are considering GLP-1 or GIP medication, just starting, or already in the process, therapy can help you move through the experience with more grounding, self-compassion, and internal support.
You are allowed to hope slowly. You are allowed to feel afraid. You are allowed to want change and still need care along the way.
