Body-Based Trauma and Anxiety Therapy at New Perceptions Counseling
Sometimes healing cannot happen through words alone.
You may understand why you feel anxious. You may know where some of your patterns began. You may have talked through your history, named your triggers, and learned coping skills. And still, your body may react before your mind can catch up.
Your chest tightens. Your stomach drops. Your shoulders tense. Your breath becomes shallow. Your heart races. You freeze, shut down, or feel the urge to escape. You may tell yourself, “I know I’m safe,” while your body responds as if danger is still present.
This is where Somatic Experiencing can be especially helpful.
Somatic Experiencing, often called SE, is a body-oriented therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine. Levine developed SE through decades of studying stress physiology, trauma, biology, psychology, neuroscience, and how animals in the wild recover after threat. His work focuses on how trauma and stress can become held in the nervous system, especially when the body’s natural fight, flight, or freeze responses are interrupted or never fully resolved.
At New Perceptions Counseling, we have a therapist who is trained in Somatic Experiencing, allowing clients to receive care from someone with specialized training in this powerful nervous-system-based modality.

Why Somatic Experiencing Was Developed
Dr. Levine noticed that trauma is not only a story we remember. It is also something the body can continue to carry.
When something overwhelming happens, the body is designed to respond. It may move into fight, flight, freeze, collapse, or shutdown. These responses are not signs of weakness. They are survival responses. They are the body’s attempt to protect us.
But when the nervous system does not get to fully complete or recover from those responses, the body may remain caught in patterns of activation or protection. Somatic Experiencing International describes SE as a method that helps resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in the body, especially when people become stuck in fight, flight, or freeze patterns.
This can show up long after the original stressor has passed. A person may feel anxious without knowing why. They may become easily overwhelmed. They may feel disconnected from their body, hyperaware of every body sensation, or unable to relax even when life appears calm on the outside.
Somatic Experiencing was developed to help the body gently renegotiate these unfinished survival responses. Rather than forcing someone to relive painful memories, SE works slowly and carefully with body sensations, nervous system cues, and the client’s capacity for safety. Research descriptions of SE often note that it works through interoceptive and proprioceptive awareness, meaning awareness of internal body sensations and the body’s sense of itself in space.

What Somatic Experiencing Can Help With
Somatic Experiencing can be helpful for people who feel that anxiety, trauma, or stress lives in their body as much as in their thoughts.
This may include people experiencing:
Anxiety and chronic worry
Panic symptoms
Trauma or PTSD symptoms
Body-based fear or hypervigilance
Stress-related tension
Emotional overwhelm
Shutdown, numbness, or dissociation
Grief held in the body
Difficulty feeling safe or settled
Medical anxiety or health-related fear
Body image distress
Shame connected to weight, size, or appearance
Anxiety about beginning medication or medical treatment
Somatic Experiencing can be especially supportive for people who say things like, “I know this doesn’t make sense, but my body still reacts,” or “I can talk about it, but I don’t feel better inside.”
At NPC, we see Somatic Experiencing as a compassionate way to help clients listen to the body without being overtaken by it. This is not about forcing the body to calm down. It is about helping the body learn, slowly and safely, that it does not have to stay braced for danger.

Somatic Experiencing for Anxiety
Many types of anxiety are not just mental. Anxiety can be a full-body experience.
Your mind may worry, but your body may also prepare for threat. You may feel tightness, restlessness, nausea, dizziness, shallow breathing, muscle tension, or a sense of being trapped inside yourself. You may scan your body constantly for signs that something is wrong. You may interpret normal sensations as danger.
Somatic Experiencing can help clients begin to notice these sensations in smaller, more manageable ways. Rather than becoming flooded by anxiety, clients learn to track what is happening inside with support, curiosity, and grounding.
This can be especially helpful when anxiety is connected to the body itself.
For example, some clients experience anxiety around body image, weight, eating patterns, shame, or the fear of being seen. The body may feel like a place of criticism rather than safety. Somatic Experiencing can help create a gentler relationship with the body, one built on awareness and compassion rather than judgment.

Somatic Experiencing, GLP-1s, GIP Medications, and the Fear of Hope
Starting a new treatment regimen, including GLP-1 or GIP medications, can bring up complex emotions.
For some people, these medications bring hope. For others, they bring fear, grief, uncertainty, or anxiety. You may wonder:
Will this work for me when nothing else has?
What if I let myself hope and then I am disappointed again?
What if my body changes but I still feel the same inside?
What if I lose weight and still feel uncomfortable being seen?
What if people treat me differently?
What if I do not know how to trust my body?
These questions are tender. They are not just about medication. They may touch years of body shame, dieting history, medical frustration, fear of failure, fear of success, and the pain of having felt disconnected from your body.
Somatic Experiencing can support people through this process by helping them stay connected to their body in a more regulated way. It can help clients notice fear without being consumed by it, build capacity for change, and create a more compassionate internal relationship as the body goes through transition.
At NPC, we understand that body-related anxiety is not solved by simply changing the body. Healing often requires tending to the emotional, relational, and nervous system patterns that have lived underneath the struggle.

What Makes NPC’s Approach Different
At New Perceptions Counseling, we do not see symptoms as problems to be judged. We see them as meaningful signals from the nervous system, the body, and the deeper self.
Somatic Experiencing fits beautifully with the way we understand healing. It honors the wisdom of the body. It moves gently. It does not require you to tell every detail of your story before you are ready. It helps create safety from the inside out.
Our approach is warm, relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in respect for your pace. With a trained SE therapist on our team, clients have access to a modality that can help reach places that talk therapy alone may not fully touch.
If anxiety, trauma, body image distress, or fear around medical change has left you feeling disconnected from yourself, Somatic Experiencing may offer a different path forward.
You do not have to force yourself into healing. You can begin gently.
At New Perceptions Counseling, we are here to help you reconnect with your body, calm your nervous system, and move toward a greater sense of safety, steadiness, and wholeness.
