Why Talk Therapy Alone May Not Be Enough for Trauma and Anxiety

Talk therapy can be deeply helpful. It gives people a place to tell their story, understand patterns, name emotions, and feel supported. For many clients, being heard and understood is an essential part of healing.
But sometimes, talking alone does not reach the places where trauma and anxiety are held.

A person may understand what happened to them. They may know why they react the way they do. They may have insight, language, and awareness. And still, their body may respond as if the past is happening now.

They may freeze during conflict. They may panic when someone is disappointed. They may shut down when they feel overwhelmed. They may feel anxious in situations that seem safe. They may feel disconnected from their body or flooded by sensations they cannot control.

This is not because they are not trying hard enough. It is because trauma and anxiety are not stored only as thoughts. They are also stored in the nervous system.

Somatic Experiencing, or SE, is a therapy approach designed to work with this body-based layer of healing. It helps clients gently notice sensations, impulses, tension, bracing, numbness, and activation in the body. Instead of asking someone to retell painful memories in detail, SE often focuses on what the nervous system is doing in the present moment.

This can be especially helpful for people who feel overwhelmed when talking about the past. It can also be helpful for people who feel disconnected from their emotions, struggle to identify what they feel, or become flooded easily.

In SE, the therapist helps you move slowly. You may explore small amounts of sensation at a time, then return to grounding, support, or a sense of steadiness. This back-and-forth process can help the nervous system build capacity. Over time, the body may begin to release patterns of protection that have been held for years.

At New Perceptions Counseling, we see this as a gentle and respectful approach to trauma and anxiety treatment. Healing does not have to mean forcing yourself to relive everything. It does not have to mean pushing past your limits. It can mean learning how to listen to your body and support it at a pace that feels manageable.

SE can be helpful for anxiety, trauma symptoms, panic, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, shutdown, body image distress, and the sense of never fully being able to relax. It can also support people navigating medical or body-related changes, including those considering or starting GLP-1 or GIP medications.

Many people come to therapy believing they need to “get over it” or “stop reacting.” Somatic Experiencing offers a different message: your reactions make sense. Your body has been trying to protect you. Now, with support, your body can begin learning that something new is possible.

Talk therapy helps us understand the story.

Somatic Experiencing helps the body begin to experience safety within that story.

Both can be powerful. And for some clients, SE is the missing piece that allows healing to move from insight into embodied change.
